An organized home is the first step to an organized life. Yet the reason why so many people have a hard time getting started is because it can be so overwhelming that they just end up pushing the whole thing off. I've broken everything down for you in 6 easy steps.
Step 1: Start off small. Sometimes we get really excited and set high goals for ourselves. Organizing your entire house in a day just isn't possible! I recommend committing to one small area at a time- think drawer or cabinet. Doing that will be more beneficial in the long run and give you the motivation you need to work towards your overall goal.
Step 2: Do not rush the process! Give yourself a reasonable amount of time to complete your area the way you want.
If you know you have a busy day ahead I recommend pushing off the task. You’ll feel discouraged once you take everything out to only have to throw everything back in the way it was before.
Step 3: Take everything out.
It’s time to see what you’re actually working with! When removing the items from your area,
start to categorize them based on what they are and what goes together. (ex: hair brushes with ponytails). Once everything is out become familiar with the space you are working with and assess if some items still belong in that area.
Step 4: Purge. Purge. Purge
For some, getting rid of items can be very hard. When it comes to purging depending on the item ask yourself these questions. When was the last time I used this product? Is this product broken? What is the expiration date? (if you are cleaning through your pantry or refrigerator) Think of purging as a way of getting familiar with what you still love and what you are ready to let go of. During this step make sure to create piles of trash, donations, or giving to a loved one. Once that is established I recommend getting those items out of the space you are working with. The less clutter you have the less overwhelming you will feel.
Step 5: Personalize your area.
Now is the time to get your measuring tape out and write down your measurements. Figure out what products will benefit that area the most. Ask yourself what products will utilize this space to the best of its ability. Using blue tape (if you don't have blue tape post it notes work too) label the area with what should go where. Always put your most used items in front. You want those items to be easily accessible and visible. I’ve linked below some of our go to products that we use on a daily basis for jobs.
Step 6: Putting everything together.
Once you have selected the products you will be using this is where you really get to have fun with it! Product selection really makes any area come to life. Since you helped yourself out with labeling above all you have to do is put your items in their new home and switch out the tape for a label! I’ve linked some labeling options below. Whether you buy pre printed labels or use your label machine do not forget this final step.
Remember, when it comes to organizing you're going to have to go through a lot of trial and error before you get to your happy place. Don’t get too stuck on perfection or an unrealistic standard. If you ever do get stuck, always revert back to here for a helping hand. You got this
